Choosing an Automotive Scan Tool or Code Reader

Question: I own 2 vehicles a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse and a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. I am looking for a scanner that will cover both vehicles. I am not familiar with using these tools so I am not really sure what features I need. I just want to figure out what is going on when a check engine light comes on.
