I own a 1995 Mercedes SL500 with 87,700 miles on it. I drive the car mostly in the summer months and start it up a few times during the winter months. Recently I started having some problems with the battery going dead. I would start it every 3 to four days and everything was OK, but it went dead after I left it for 7 days. I recharged the battery and it occurred again after about 6 or seven days. I had the battery tested by a professional with a tester that checked it while the car was off and while there was a load on it (revving the engine at 1500 rpms). Battery checks OK. Alternator is charging OK (14.65 volts). Presently the battery is charged and I have been watching the voltage levels on it using a regular voltmeter. It started at 12.63v two days ago and is presently at 12.50v. Any idea what may be the problem. Could it be a short somewhere ?? Also what OTC code reader can I purchase that will check all codes for all cars (foreign and domestic) ?
regards,
Sal Ianniello
Sal, It could be normal for the battery to be dead after 7 days. The computer uses some power to maintain memory for itself and other components. As far as the code reader, any one will do to read engine codes.
